Every installation of SuperOffice is different. This document is therefore NOT a complete overview; this is particularly so with respect to custom fitting SuperOffice to your requirements. This document deals primarily with the supporting technical infrastructure that needs to be in place. If this is not addressed prior to start, it can seriously delay any implementation. Preparation in these matters, and making sure you have 'checked off' these items will help to ensure that you get most value for our time (and hence your money).
Is a server available and linked to the network, and will the administrator(account), and all relevant access and passwords be available during the session. Note that MS 200x Server or Netware 6.5 or later is required. Note that for installations of fewer than 10 users, you do not need a server.
Are all workstations and laptops set up and linked to the network with appropriate permissions and tested? (Can they ‘see’ a share on the Server where the central program installation, database and document archive will reside)
If you have users working on laptops in the field and you want them to update from a home office/motel room etc, are RAS and/or VPN connections set up, tested and verified for all laptops, including firewall restrictions (if applicable)? (i.e can you see a share on the server without being asked for password(s) once you have successfully logged on to the network remotely)
If you intend to run an email client that is not MS Outlook XP/200x, Is at least one machine in the office (can also be the server, if applicable) available to run a mail client in background. i.e. not interfering with a regular mail user. (required for SuperOffice mail gateway)
Does your server meet the requirements set by the SQL engine you are planning to use ? (see below for list of supported SQL engines.
Does your client PC’s conform to minimum standards for running the SQL client as well as SuperOffice. (an absolute bare minimum of a 233 mhz/32 ram is required, and additional for other processor intensive applications, such as MS word and Outlook)
If you want to run the web version of SuperOffice, you will need to have Microsoft Internet Information server running, and available from the internet. The SuperOffice web server will reside as a folder under the wwwroot on the webshare folder. Note that SuperOffice does NOT set security on the webshare, this is done by IIS.
Software:
SuperOffice requires an SQL engine, and several SQL engines are supported. Is the SQL server installed and tested to satisfaction, including having the appropriate license(s) for the number of users you are considering ? If you do not have a SQL Server already, we offer Sybase, Microsoft, Oracle or IBM DB2, provided it is for running SuperOffice: Ask us for a quote.
Are all client PC’s intended to run SuperOffice capable of running the SQL client in question. (i.e ODBC release for the system DNS. Has this been installed/updated?
Note: SuperOffice Six Win Client (delivered from Oct. 2005) requires WinXP/2000. You can not run SuperOffice with satisfactory performance on a Win9x or WinME machine. Please let us know if you intend to run SuperOffice as a web/citrix/terminal server client as different rules may apply.
Are all the programs that are to be used by SuperOffice to create shared documents, such as text editors, Spreadsheets, CAD drawings, email clients, of the same type and version release? – Do they work? (Single use/proprietary email solutions such as AOL will not work with SuperOffice)
SuperOffice supports several database engines. Our intent with the below is NOT to provide any endorsement or lack thereof of any of the alternatives listed. For that, we refer to the many publications available that amongst others evaluates database engine performance, reliability and price/benefit considerations. Also, you will need to review the requirements that the producer sets with respect to hardware/software to run the particular server.
SuperOffice Six may run on older versions, but this is not actively supported, and will not get error corrections or being tested/subject service releases of Six.
SuperOffice will introduce Support for Microsoft SQL Express. This is a free database engine, but is limited to support a database with a maximum size of 2 GB.
Is existing data residing in accounting systems, personal info managers (Outlook, ACT), or 3rd party lists and you would like them available in SuperOffice? We often assist with import. One good idea in this matter is to clean up in these databases before we arrive, (i.e, if you have an account that has not seen any movement for a year or two, chances are that it needs to be deleted/reviewed) as well as keeping all these sources easily available. The time required to do an import is impossible to ascertain in advance, but quite a lot can be done in 3-5hours provided data entry has been uniform. We do have a lot of experience with clean up and have a number of approaches to clean up a lot of records in a short time. Do however note that this will take additional time.
If you would like to include training, which depending upon scope of use, user familiarity and comfort level with software, may take from 2 to 4 hours (regular users) to 1 day (administrators and people using selection functionality, such as people in marketing and others doing mail merges, mass emailing, campaigns etc.
Will they be available during the time allotted? Will you have classroom facilities available and scheduled, and appropriate equipment ready for use ? (Projector etc).
If one-on-one training is preferred, have the schedule been developed and agreed upon by your colleagues ?
We ask that you review these items, and communicate back to us that they have been understood, and appropriate action have been taken before commencement of installation.
